Accounting Assistant Job in Enderby, BC at Splatsin Administration Office –

Community Profile

The Splatsin people reside on reserve lands adjacent to the City of Enderby to the south and across the Shuswap River to the east, within the traditional and unceded territory of the Secwépemc, the largest Interior Salish-speaking First Nation in Canada. Their traditional territory stretches from the B.C./Alberta border near the Yellowhead Pass to the plateau west of the Fraser River, southeast to the Arrow Lakes, and the upper reaches of the Columbia River encompassing 180,000 square kilometres, 32 communities, and a population of 15,000 people. The Splatsin and Secwépemc has total jurisdiction and title to all of their people, lands, and resources and have not surrendered, ceded, or released them to the government.

Position Purpose

The Accounting Assistant will provide support to the Director of Finance in accounting and financial activities including preparing working papers for financial statements and assisting with the annual audit. This position will also be responsible for timely and accurate entering of invoices, processing and monitoring of incoming payments in Accounts Receivable. Ability to provide back up support for Accounts Payable and Payroll. Acts in accordance with Splatsin’s Financial Management Law and Policies.

Key Result Areas and Tasks

  • Reconcile accounts, prepare working papers for in house financial statements and provide analysis when required
  • Solid knowledge of accounting principles and auditing standards (GAAP, GAAS)
  • Experience using Xyntax accounting program an asset
  • Prepare invoices and perform small bank reconciliation
  • Enter, store and update receivables data ensuring receivables are correctly coded and applied to the appropriate account
  • Prepare bank deposits on incoming payments
  • Monitor accounts receivable, follow up on overdue accounts and at times respond to receivables inquiries
  • Strong ability to organize, prioritize, multitask and manage time
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding financial transactions
  • Assist and provide back up support to team members as required
  • Other duties as required by the Finance Director

Relationships and Supervision

  • Reports to the Director of Finance
  • Works and builds relationships with the office team staff
  • Communicates regularly with management regarding receivables, collections, and receipts
  • Communicates regularly with third parties (e.g., renters)

Position Requirements

  • Diploma in Accounting or related field
  • At least 3 years of recent experience in accounting (with a non-profit considered an asset)
  • Strong ability to organize, prioritize, multitask and manage time
  • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage stress/pressure
  • Proficient user of computer software (MS Office is required and excellent knowledge of Excel)
  • Strong data entry and keyboarding skills
  • Sound administrative skills and excellent teamwork
  • Discretion & respect for confidentiality
  • Experience working with First Nations peoples is valued and knowledge of the Splatsin an asset
